The main aim of a fabric mask is to prevent your own bodily fluids from being expelled or you being exposed to someone else’s bodily fluids.
The best fabric for surgical face masks is high thread count cotton that can be easily washed and NON woven fabric as a filter that can be replaced several times during the day. You can purchase readymade carbon filters too. Looking for other filter options for your DIY mask check out these options.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought many changes to our daily lives, and one of the most visible is the widespread use of face masks. Since the beginning of the pandemic, health experts have emphasized the importance of wearing masks as a key measure to slow the spread of the virus. But why are face masks so effective, and how do they work?
Firstly, it’s important to understand how COVID-19 spreads. The virus is primarily transmitted through respiratory droplets that are released when an infected person talks, coughs, or sneezes. These droplets can travel through the air and enter the bodies of people nearby, infecting them with the virus. This is why maintaining physical distance from others is important, but it’s not always enough.
This is where face masks come in. Masks act as a barrier that blocks respiratory droplets from traveling through the air and entering the bodies of others. The most effective masks are those that fit tightly around the nose and mouth, such as surgical masks or N95 respirators. These masks can filter out most particles, including those that carry the COVID-19 virus.
Cloth masks are also effective, although they may not offer the same level of protection as surgical masks or respirators. However, cloth masks are still highly recommended as they can significantly reduce the spread of the virus. The key is to make sure the mask fits snugly over the nose and mouth and that it is made of multiple layers of tightly woven fabric.
In addition to protecting others from the wearer of the mask, wearing a mask can also protect the wearer themselves. Masks can prevent respiratory droplets from entering the mouth and nose, reducing the risk of infection. This is especially important for people who may be asymptomatic carriers of the virus and not realize they are infected.
It’s worth noting that masks are not a perfect solution. They must be worn properly and consistently to be effective, and they are just one tool in a larger effort to slow the spread of the virus. Other measures such as frequent hand washing, avoiding large gatherings, and staying home when sick are also important.
