Mastering Product Photography: Tips for Stunning Etsy Listings

December 14, 2023 by Shellie Wilson Leave a Comment

Hey there, fellow Etsy sellers! As creators and artisans, we pour our hearts into crafting beautiful products. But how do we capture that beauty in our Etsy listings and entice potential customers? Great photos can be the difference to making money and not making money.

The answer lies in mastering the art of product photography. In this article, I want to share some valuable tips  to help you elevate your product photography game and create stunning Etsy listings that make a lasting impression. So grab your camera and let’s dive in!

Don’t worry if your photos are not great to start with, take your time as every new skill we learn takes patience.

Find the Perfect Lighting:
Lighting is the secret ingredient that can transform an ordinary photo into a captivating one. Natural light is often the best choice, so find a spot near a window or set up a small photo studio near a well-lit area. Avoid harsh shadows by using diffusers or sheer curtains to create soft, even lighting that showcases your product’s details.
I remember struggling to capture the intricate details of my handmade jewelry until I discovered the magic of natural light. I set up a small photo area near a window and noticed an instant improvement in the clarity and vibrancy of my product photos. The soft, diffused lighting added a beautiful glow to my jewelry, making it more appealing to potential buyers.

Consider Backgrounds and Props:
The background and props you choose can set the mood and enhance the visual appeal of your products. Opt for clean and uncluttered backgrounds that don’t distract from your item. Solid-colored backdrops or textured surfaces can work wonders. Experiment with props that complement your product’s theme or aesthetic, but remember to keep the focus on the item itself.
When I started selling handmade candles, I wanted to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere in my product photos. I chose a rustic wooden table as my backdrop and added a few carefully selected props like dried flowers and vintage books. The combination created a warm and homely feel, drawing customers in and helping them envision the candles in their own spaces.

Showcasing Details and Scale:
Customers want to see the details and quality of your products, so make sure to capture close-up shots that highlight key features. Include photos that showcase different angles, textures, and any unique elements. Additionally, if the size of your product is relevant, provide a photo that includes a familiar object or a hand for scale reference.
I found that close-up shots allowed customers to appreciate the intricate stitches and texture of my knit prodcts. I also included a photo with the scarf draped around a mannequin and another with a model wearing it to provide a sense of scale. These visuals helped customers visualize how the scarf would look and feel when worn.

Editing for Enhancements:
Editing your product photos can help enhance their overall quality and make them stand out. Basic adjustments like brightness, contrast, and sharpness can go a long way. Use photo editing software or smartphone apps to fine-tune your images while maintaining a natural and authentic look. Remember, editing should enhance your product, not misrepresent it.

At first, I was hesitant about photo editing, fearing that it might make my products look different in person. However, I realized that subtle editing adjustments could bring out the true colors and details that might be difficult to capture with a camera alone. I used photo editing software to enhance the vibrancy of my handmade artwork without altering its essence.

By mastering the art of product photography, you can create stunning Etsy listings that grab attention, showcase your products’ true beauty, and entice potential customers to make a purchase. Remember, photography is an ongoing learning process, so don’t be afraid to experiment and refine your techniques.  Selling on Etsy, isn’t just about making the products, so much more goes into running a handmade business.
