10 Things NOT to sell on Etsy

July 20, 2023 by Shellie Wilson Leave a Comment

As a seasoned Etsy seller, I’ve seen my fair share of ups and downs on the platform. One of the biggest hurdles that new sellers face is trying to stand out in a market that is already oversaturated with similar products. When I first started on Etsy, I made the mistake of trying to sell items that were already being offered by hundreds of other sellers, and it was a recipe for disappointment. After some trial and error, I discovered that the key to success on Etsy is finding a niche or creating a unique product that fills a gap in the market. To save you some time and effort, here are ten things you should avoid selling on Etsy if you want to be successful.

Jewelry – Unless you have a truly unique and distinctive style, it’s unlikely that you’ll make much of an impact in the crowded jewelry market. There are already thousands of sellers offering similar pieces, so unless you have a new perspective on this category, it’s best to steer clear.

Candles – The candle market on Etsy is saturated with vendors offering similar scents and packaging. If you don’t have a truly unique scent or eye-catching packaging, it can be tough to stand out in this market.

Clothing – The clothing market on Etsy is extremely competitive, and it’s tough to make a profit unless you’re an experienced fashion designer with a unique aesthetic. Many sellers on Etsy offer mass-produced clothing or items that they’ve purchased from wholesalers, so it’s difficult to compete with their pricing.

Mugs – Sure, everyone loves a good mug, but there are already too many sellers offering similar designs and products. Unless you can offer something truly unique, it’s best to avoid the mug market altogether.

Stickers – While it may seem like stickers are an easy sell, the truth is that the market is incredibly oversaturated with all sorts of designs. To stand out in this market, you need to have a unique style or cater to a specific niche.

Bath bombs – Bath bombs were once a popular trend on Etsy, but the market has become incredibly crowded, making it difficult to stand out. Unless you can offer a unique scent or shape, it’s best to avoid this market.

Digital prints – While digital prints can be a profitable product, the market is so oversaturated with designers and artists that it can be difficult to make a name for yourself. To succeed in this market, you need to have a truly unique and eye-catching style.

Phone cases – The phone case market on Etsy is flooded with cheap and mass-produced cases, making it tough to make a profit selling handmade or custom cases. Unless you have a truly unique design, it’s best to avoid this market.

Pet accessories – While it may seem like a fun and profitable niche, the pet accessory market is incredibly crowded, making it difficult to stand out. To succeed in this market, you need to offer something truly unique or cater to a specific pet niche.

Baby clothes and accessories – While there is certainly a demand for baby clothing and accessories, there are already too many sellers offering similar products. To succeed in this market, you need to offer something truly unique or cater to a specific style or niche.

While these markets are oversaturated, it doesn’t mean that you can’t find success selling these items on Etsy. If you have a unique perspective or product, there is always a way to carve out a niche for yourself. However, if you’re just starting out and looking for a profitable product to sell, it’s best to avoid these oversaturated markets and focus on something more niche or unique.
