Book Review- HomeMade Modern by Ben Uyeda

December 4, 2015 by Katie Smith 1 Comment

homemademodern

Hey guys, today I wanted to share this new book with you, HomeMade Modern. It’s a new Craft book by Ben Uyeda, however it’s not your normal craft book, and is more of a DIY home furniture book. The furniture is all very modern, and I like that the instructions are easily read by those of us who don’t build furniture everyday.

Here’s a little more about the book from the publisher:

Based on the popular website of the same name, HomeMade Modern includes attractive, budget-friendly projects to furnish your home and outdoor space. While some home design books tend to be either makeshift or too expensive, HomeMade Modern has a young, edgy feel and is all about projects that are substantial and aspirational, like a catalog of cool stuff that you can afford and actually want to make.

All 30 projects are made from metal, wood, concrete, steel, and other natural or recycled materials easily found in your home or local store.

The creative designs are as accessible to the seasoned DIY enthusiast as they are to someone just beginning to break into the DIY world. Some of the projects include a concrete kitchen island, an ironbound bookcase, a wood pendant lamp, a plywood coffee table, and a pine night stand. Also included is information on tools and sourcing materials, 150 step-by-step illustrations, and 30+ full-color photos.

My favorite project from the book is the Flip Up Desk. I love desks of all kinds, so of course this is my favorite. I like that you can hide things away and that the desk expands- perfect for multi tasking indie artists, right? The tutorial is even shared online, if you want to take a peek here.

I think the hanging vertical garden is a favorite project as well.

Not all of the projects are quite my style, but they are really fun and interesting. I plan on giving this book as a Christmas gift to my Sister because I know she will love the designs.

If you’re just looking for another craft book, I’d say this isn’t it, but if you like to build things, or want to try creating your own one-of-a-kind piece of furniture- Get this book!
