Amazon just launched its Handmade at Amazon section- a place for indie artists to sell their handmade products. Is it the new etsy? USA Today recently published an article saying it may be an “etsy killer”.
They say: “Fans of artisanal and handmade items will have a new place to shop Thursday with the launch of Amazon’s answer to Etsy — a store on its site open only to artisans making hand-crafted items.
Etsy has been under fire for its decision in 2013 to allow sellers to use some outside manufactures.
Those frustrated sellers and buyers “didn’t have anywhere to go. Now, with the introduction of Homemade at Amazon, sellers have another venue to sell their wares,” Luria said.
Etsy CEO Chad Dickerson said he believes his company still has the best platform for creative entrepreneurs.”
Sellers must apply to join the store, providing information about the items they make and how they make them. If you’re interested, you can visit Handmade at Amazon here.

Please read Amazons selling agreement carefully – they make it clear once you list with them…they can(will) re-create any item they like (sells well).

I took a look and must say, I’m not too impressed. I wouldn’t think etsy has much to be concerned about.

Having another place for “handmade” artisans to sell their creations is a good thing. to have to compete with those who use outside manufacturers is not fair to them. I have sold on Etsy, but that was before they changed the format. I am rather disappointed in Etsy for moving away from their original program.

All things considered it is all about the numbers, Amazon can deliver 50 times the customers that Etsy can and that is what will be the business breaker. For those who want to sell, they will choose Amazon simply because the odds are better. The bottom line always rules.
