Indie Artist Interview- Kimera Wachna

September 7, 2015 by Katie Smith 2 Comments

I love getting to know fellow artists, so what better way to do that then to actually interview them? I do an interview series here on Indie Crafts where I question indie artists like you and me so that we can see a peek into their life! Today I am interviewing Kimera, the artist behind Gracemere Woods.

Who are you? Where are you from?

Hi! My name is Kimera Wachna, and I’m from Westchester, New York.

Are you an Indie Artist/Do you sell you handmade items?

Yes, I am the creator of Gracemere Woods! I make hand painted and burned images on wood slices, as well as illustrations, and jewelry.

When/why did you decide to sell your work?

I had worked for other artists and businesses, and though I learned a lot from them, it never felt like I was on the right path. I’ve always had a strong pull to pursue my own vision through the arts, and finally took the plunge. And I’m so glad I did.

Gracemere Woods was initially just a project, a hobby that my boyfriend and I started last year to get though the long Winter season. He collected, cut, and sanded the wood down, and I wood burned and painted on them.  We didn’t know it then, but that’s how Gracemere Woods was born.

What does the term “Indie” mean to you?

Indie means having the courage, grit, and perseverance to put your unique self out there. It means working really hard because you’re doing what you love. I have a lot of respect and admiration for indie artists and how fearless and hardworking they are. I take inspiration from that.

What is your favorite type of crafting?

I have a fascination with crafting small. I love the idea of painting a bunch of tiny wood slices and making it a collection of pieces that I can arrange and rearrange on my wall. The magnets come with metal tacks to put into your wall, so you can hang them in your favorite space instead of just on your fridge.
Explain a little bit about your process.

First we collect free fallen branches. We cut, carefully select, and sand each one by hand. I wood burn and/or paint on the wood slices (usually woodland and spiritual imagery), then seal them with a water based sealant. At the very end each piece either becomes a twine wall hanging, magnet, or maybe even a wood-macramé wall piece.
What does your workspace look like?

My workspace is sort of like an organized mess. It looks really cluttered, but if someone asks me where a specific thing is I’ll know exactly where I placed it.
What is one thing you have learned from your business?

I’ve learned so many things! I find that it’s super important to keep moving and get that energy flowing. You never want that energy to fall stagnant especially if you’re your own boss. If I feel a creative block the best way to feel inspired again is to try something new.

Also, get connected with your customers! It brings a whole new level of meaning and inspiration to my work.

What inspires you?

Where I live mostly. I live in the woods, surrounded by the magic of illuminated night skies and forest animals. I’m inspired by dreams, as well as just meeting talented people who are also pursuing what they love.

A fun question- What is your favorite food?
I love any sort of breakfast food. But more than that, I have a coffee addiction. If I’m feeling stressed out, there’s nothing like a great cup of coffee to smooth things over!

And lastly, where can we find you on the web?
