Indie Artist Interview- Gareth Johnson

July 25, 2015 by Katie Smith 2 Comments

Don’t you just love getting to know fellow artists? Me too! so what better way to do that then to actually interview them? Today I am interviewing Gareth Johnson, an artist from the UK!

> Who are you? Where are you from?

Hi Im Gareth from Berkshire South UK.
> Are you an Indie Artist/Do you sell you handmade items?
I consider myself an Indie Artist because I’m not widely known. I sell my work online and through a pop up art gallery called Concrete Sketchbook based in Basingstoke. Its a fun thing to be involved with and inspiring to see everyones work.

> When/why did you decide to sell your work?
I’ve only really been selling my work for a handful of years. I suppose it started when I had interest from social media outlets such as instagram. People seemed to like what I was doing and I received a few commissions also. From there I continued but its never an easy thing. I’d love to be able to make a good living solely from selling my work. We all just need that lucky break I guess from working hard.
> What does the term “Indie” mean to you?
Indie for me feels like something a bit ‘underground’. Something that has a small following before you get a wider recognition. Theres all ways something cool, dare I say ‘Hipster’ about ‘Indie’. Some may have mixed feelings about that :p
> What is your favorite type of crafting?
My favourite type of crafting would be painting an object, or a simple pen and ink piece. I’d love to get into designer toy design. That would be awesome!
> Explain a little bit about your process.
I usually start with a light sketch which forms a basis to lay down some inks. From there I might go digital on photoshop.

At the moment I’m really into water based paint markers and basic shapes which I’ll use on canvas or high quality textured paper. I usually work in some acrylic’s and spray paint too.
> What does your workspace look like?
My work space is one of three things. The living room table (I live in a small house), out side by the shed for real messy projects or sitting somewhere comfortable with the laptop doing something digital.

> What inspires you?
I guess the easiest answer to that would be pop culture. Mainly sci-fi, monsters, bold colours and abstract type stuff. Their are so many great visual treats for your eyes to feast upon.
> A fun question- What is your favorite food?
Can I pick a drink? TeA! Too late 😛 Tea solves everything! I like cheese burgers too. The Kryptonite to my vegetarianism haha!
> And lastly, where can we find you on the web?
artofgarethjohnson.com is the main hub for links to everything. You’ll find me on instagram a lot! I sell merch through society6.com/garethjohnsonart and apparel on garethjohnson.rageon.com and original art, prints and stickers through the ConcreteSketchbook gallery in Basingstoke UK.

Thanks for letting us get to know you, Gareth!
