UC Davis has TONS of free agricultural publications, many of them have really useful info for your average gardener. They also have info on food and nutrition and food preserving.

Not just UC Davis.
Look at the website for the extension service in any state. Your own state’s extension publications are likely better tailored for your growing conditions than another state’s.
If you are working on a crop that is a specialty of a particular region you might find better info in a different state.

Wow, imagine my surprise seeing this post! I work out of a Cooperative Extension office which is the education and research branch of the University of California’s Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources, based in Davis, CA.
County Cooperative Extension offices (http://ucanr.org/sites/anrstaff/Cooperative_Extension/) have a wealth of information for the public to use, many of our programs are free or for a small fee.
Our programs include and are not limited to: 4-H Youth Development, Nutrition Education Programs, Home Food Preservation, Urban Horticulture, and Master Gardener Programs. Some counties also have region specific programs which might include agriculture, marine science, viticulture, and a myriad of other programs.
Please use us! With the hard financial times we are facing now, we need all of the PR we can get and thank you so much for mentioning the UC Davis publications!

I’m off to Davis tomorrow to visit the organic farm as part of the Landscape Hort program at Merritt College in Oakland! Can’t wait to check it out!
