15 Shibori Tie Dye Folding Techniques To Step Up Your Tie-Dye Game

May 31, 2016 by Katie Smith Leave a Comment

Take your Summer Tie Dye to the next level with these fun dying techniques that Zoe from Creative in Chicago shared! Zoe posted photo tutorials showing 15 unique ways to prepare fabric ready for dying with natural indigo dye and what she used to get each pattern.

I think I love the Side Circle best.

I’m so excited to share my love for shibori tie-dye techniques with you today. Shibori is a traditional Japanese dyeing method that involves folding, twisting, and binding fabric in unique ways to create stunning patterns. And let me tell you, once you try shibori, you’ll never want to go back to regular tie-dye!

What I love most about shibori is the endless possibilities it offers for creativity and self-expression. There are so many different techniques and patterns to explore, from the classic Arashi (pole-wrapping) method to more intricate shapes like kumo (spiderweb) or ne-maki (binding with thread). Each technique yields a unique and beautiful result, making every shibori piece one-of-a-kind.

In this roundup, I’ve gathered 15 of my favorite shibori tie-dye folding techniques that are sure to take your tie-dye game to the next level. Whether you’re a shibori newbie or a seasoned pro, these techniques will inspire you to create some truly stunning designs.

My personal favorite shibori technique is itajime (shape-resist) folding. This involves folding the fabric into geometric shapes like triangles or squares and then clamping it between two pieces of wood or plastic before dyeing. The resulting patterns are bold and graphic, and can be customized with different colors and folding methods.

So if you’re ready to up your tie-dye game and dive into the wonderful world of shibori, then grab your fabric, dye, and some rubber bands, and let’s get started!
