This retablo kit was sent to me to review from Retablokits.com.
Retablo’s are traditional paintings of patron saints that people displayed or gave away to honor patron saints. You can read about them on wikipedia or on the retablo kit site.
The kit includes and instruction sheet, a gessoed board with leather strap for hanging, a mechanical pencil, a carbon sheet, a design sheet, and a watercolor paint set complete with two brushes.
It’s fairly self explainable what to do, you trace your design on the board and then paint it. They sent me a non-traditional dia de los muertos design that I liked but was actually hard to execute because of the detail in it! I opted to outline with a black marker and that worked really well.
This was a great kit for kids as it includes everything you need to execute +folk arty historical educational info. If your homeschooling this would be a great activity.
I would encourage people to read about this form of art and have fun creating your own versions. You can get a variety of designs from The Retablo Kits site or you could try out painting your own patron saints like Hello Kitty or Totoro, for instance.
